Lughnasadh is the first of the harvest festivals and thus heralds the beginning, traditionally of the harvest season—although here in Australia, harvest is already well underway. While Lughnasadh and Lammas have become almost interwined with one another, it is important to remember that Lammas is an Anglo Saxon traditional holiday—it was referred to as ‘Loaf Mass’ and traditionally signalled the beginning of the grain season. Lughnasadh is an pre-Christian Gaelic holiday observed historically thoughout Ireland, Scotland and Isle of Man celebration in honour of the God Lugh to celebrate him. Lughnasadh and Lammas throughout the modern Pagan movement have been merged into one festival however it is important to acknowledge and remember the roots for each festival and the peoples who came before.
